What is Notational analysis
It is basically the gathering and analysing of information that has
been gained from observing performance in a competitive situation. For example a
basic analysis could be shots on/off target and passes given away, while a more
detailed analysis could include effective back/front post crosses, showing the area of field
possession is regained. Usually carried out for both the coaches own to make performances better and also Notational analysis maybe taken out on the opposition before the game so a coach is able to see what areas of the game they excel in and can then therefor judge how to counter it or alternatively take advantage of any weaknesses the other team might have. (Coaches Colleague , 2009)

What needs to happen so its effective
To make notational analysis effective it needs to be reliable for example if you notated the same thing again would you get the same results?
Notational Analysis lacks in reliability when the game is live as there maybe things that you miss and you cant go back and rewind to check. To make results more reliable at live games teams may use more than one analyst notating the same thing for example amount of shots a team takes. After the game they would compare there results and take average between them both to work out the amount of shots that was actually taken. (C Carling et al., 2008:26)
Analysts can often be subjective for example there idea of what a scoring chance is in a match. Analysts need to have clear descriptions and direction about what they are analysing for results to be valid if not results will be totally different from each analyst giving a coaches a untrue result. (S Dogramac et al., 2011:853)

Key Performance indicators
Analyst in each sport have a frame work of performance indicators that allows them to work out what areas need to notated in a game, a study was don't by M Hughes et al to distinguish what the key performance indicators are in football, these also apply to some other similar invasion games, this was done to help give analysts a clear framework to work from. Hughes looked at individual roles of the player and those roles in different situations during the game, for example the strikers when in possession of the ball should be scoring goals and resieving long balls but the strikers job with out it should be to keep opponents in front of you. Frequently, authors (e.g. Reilly & Holmes, 1983; Dufour, 1993) have suggested the need for further research in this area.Williams (2009) suggested that improving the process of constructing operational definitions within performance analysis and using a standard set of definitions for a sport would enhance the quality of data sets and promote future research and analysis. What Can Be Notated?

Individual Notations:
Notational Analysis doesn't have to be done on a whole team or team play but also can be done on just one individual.
Examples of this could include a strikers positioning, a defenders tackle success rate and or a midfields runs into the box. (M Hughes and I M. Franks, 2004:141) The Picture to the left of this statement is Wayne Rooneys goal against West Ham, What would have been Notated here is Waynes shots and they are on the pitch of where he shoots from.
Team Notations:
Team Notation Analysis is the analysis of the whole team for example number of passes shots or tackles done by anybody on the team, it is also possible to notate possession with a stopwatch or do zonal notations showing something that happened in a certain part of the pitch.

Why would that be useful to
coach and performer
Notation analysis is useful for coach as a analyst can hand them results and stats from a game then they can look to adapt training sessions to work on weaknesses, for example if a analyst notates that the team only puts 40% of shots on target, the coach can then take this and then design a drill to work on shooting.
Notations can also benefit a athlete directly as they can self evaluate any results, useful applications could include a player seeing what position or zone they have manly been in, or for example made crosses in. a player can then take this to change there game for the better. Alternatively they could see that they get most goals and succus from a specific zone then look to take advantage of that.

Here is a example of notational Analyse
I Will be notating the first 10 minutes of this Barcelona- Real Madrid match I will look at the number of Passes by both teams to show a comparison. I will be notating the game live on paper with a section for each team and i will make a tally every time a pass is made.
Results: Barcelona made 63 Passes Compared to Madrid's 11. Barcelona went on to win the game 5-0 with 1 of the goals in the first 10 minuets. Madrid made 17% of all the passes in game this could of been a crustal factor in Madrid losing the game. The Madrid coach would then judge that and possibly decide that they need to keep the ball more often by passing it more.
